Aether
A fumi's body produces a mysterious substance known as aether, which is most notably the source of their vapor. Aether is suspected to be involved in many other bodily functions but research hasn't yet uncovered it's secrets. We know that it plays a role in the a fumi's sense of sight, smell, and taste since fumis who have aether absent from their eyes or tongues have the respective senses diminished. It is also highly suspected to play a role in the fumi's circulatory system as high amounts of aether can be found in the blood, most likely it helps regulate the fumi's body temperature.
Curiously, the color of aether differs between individual fumis, yet it is easy to determine what an individual fumi's aether color is. This is due in part to how areas with the highest concentration of aether, such as the blood; inner flesh; vapor; and somewhere on the eyes; are all colored by the fumi's aether color. If a fumi's colors don't match the aforementioned pattern, it indicates problems with it's aether flow. This is typically accompanied with a host of physical disabilities as aether plays a few major roles in a fumi's bodily systems, and can also hugely impact a fumi's mental/social development and health depending on the severity of aether loss.

Vapor
All fumis produce a strange vapor which is colorful, sweet smelling, soothing, and very slightly luminescent. Fumis have precise control over the chemical composition of their vapor and this, coupled with an advanced olfactory system, serves as their main source of communication within the species. Fumis are even able to use their vapor as a form of self defense by change the composition to be dark and noxiuos smelling. Prolonged exposure to this darkened vapor can even cause horrifying hallucinations.
Fumis produce their vapor frequently, and holding it in for long periods of time can be increasingly uncomfortable for the fumi, so much so that it may become sick. Fumis will pass out if they hold their vapor in for more than 30 minutes, it's body forcing itself to relax and breathe fully.

(RESTRICTED) Aether Abnormalities
Aether abnormalities that, due to the harm they may cause for the fumi and others around it, are restricted from public access.

Disrupted Aether FlowWhen the flow of aether is disrupted from body parts that require aether to function, it can cause great harm to the fumi. You can easily tell the flow of aether is disrupted by color; a fumi's blood, tongue and other innner flesh, and part of it's eyes should share the same color as it's vapor.
Disrupted flow in a fumi's tongue effects it's olfactory senses, making them 'deaf' towards other fumis. Disrupted flow in a fumi's eyes effects it's sleeping regulation, oftentimes causing narcoleptic symptoms. Fumis with disruped flow in their blood and flesh have severe circulatory issues and regulating body temperature, they do not survive long after birth. |
Glittering/Sparkling AetherWhen a fumi's vapor is accompanied by very tiny flecks of solid aether. These particles are highly reflective, which gives the fumi's vapor and blood a sparkling/glittering appearance. Although this doesn't have any discernible ill effects on the fumi itself, the vapor is particularly addictive, rendering this fumi dangerous to the public.
The gummi breed has this feature by default and thus, it is not considered restricted for them, despite having the same highly addictive qualities. |
Multicolored AetherVery rarely, a fumi may produce many different kinds of aether instead of just the one, giving their blood and vapor multiple colors. These fumis seem to have less control of their vapors chemical composition, making it much more difficult to communicate with other fumis as a result. This may impact the fumi's social and/or mental health in large ways.

Glowing AetherWhen a fumi produces particularly concentrated aether, all parts of it's body colored with it take on a bright glow. This glow always effects the fumi's vapor, blood, tongue, and other inner flesh and will also effect parts of the eye or skin that share the fumi's aether color.
Fumis with this feature tend to have rather unpredictable moods, and are thus deemed to unstable for the general public. Other fumis seem drawn to these individuals for an unknown reason, but how they react depends in the fumi itself. There are just as many fumis observed treating glowing individuals with excessive kindness as there are fumis lashing out with malicious intent. |
