Breeds and Origin Stories
A few distinct fumi breeds have been developed over the years, some through selective breeding, others through genetic tampering. In this guide we'll briefly cover each breed and their relations to each other, as well as each breed's origins.

Eremian Fumi
"The original fumi, whose existence is a closely guarded secret. By feeding on aether crystals, they are able to communicate with the crystal consciousness, Erema, and allow other creatures of Eremus to do the same via the fumi's vapor. Erema would task them to communicate with other species, the consumed crystals altering their bodies to be more fit for the appropriate task. To commune with the fragile yet intelligent creatures in their villages, a fumi's body grew small and soft. To commune with the giants in the deep underground ocean, fumis became large and streamlined, front limbs growing into fins while the back limbs became vestigial.
Eremian fumis had no need for fear or doubt, for the creatures of Erema regard them as sacred, but this naivete proved to be their biggest weakness when the humans arrived."
The origins of fumis, and the existence of the original Eremian fumis by extension, are a closely guarded secret kept by BioFUMES, who fear public whiplash should they be revealed. The planet Eremus itself is currently inaccessible, due to harsh atmospheric conditions and violent wildlife, both direct results of the human's betrayal.

Mutant Fumi
"By using the very crystals which Erema transformed her fumis, the humans were able to warp the gentle beasts to suit their own desires.
Many tests were failures, resulting in a fumi's death, but they became more successful the more tests were preformed. Dead fumis became living, but highly dangerous mutants. Mutants became less dangerous, and eventually the humans were able to create their goal."
Mutant is an umbrella term that refers to any and all fumis whose bodies were purposefully tampered with through the use of aether by humans. For this reason, some mutants may be relatively harmless or normal, while others hardly seem like fumis at all. For their association with the fumi origins, mutants are mostly kept as a secret from the public. Most are kept as pets or lab rats by high-ranking BioFUMES employees or otherwise very wealthy individuals.

Painted Fumi
"The end result of their experiments, a fumi whose anatomy would allow them to live on Earth, and mostly free of dangerous mutations. Their hide was colorful, earning them the breed name 'Painted'.
However, their transformative properites of their ancestors could not be fully bred out. Some fumis were born smaller and softer, like urban Eremian fumi, which were easily written off as runts. The transformation a fumi would undergo from breeding was not as easily passed off, however. Their front limbs, torso, and tail grew ridiculously bulky and muscular, the beginnings of the streamlined-water ready form of the Eremian ocean fumi.
Consumers needed a reason for such a huge bodily change, lest their suspicion uncover the fumi's true origins. So they came up with the 'fog' system to explain away the changes. Small 'nurse' fumis were meant to care for the young, 'thug' fumis foraged for food to feed themselves and their fog, and the large 'brutes' were the aggressive fog leaders, protecting their fog from danger. Everything had a practical use and was easily accepted as the truth, by humans and fumis alike. The more clever fumis know in their heart that something is wrong, that they are being lied to, and they are quick the discard the fog system and other man-made concepts."
What most consider to be the 'standard' fumi breed, leaving most none the wiser to the fumi's true origins. These fumis are adored as companion animals and are popular subjects in all forms of media as mascots, movie and chartoon characters, ect. Their typically large size, large food consumption, and need for other fumi social bonds make them difficult creatures to keep at home, so many owners prefer to house them in a foghouse facility instead.

Dwarf Fumi
Essentially the same as a painted fumi, but much smaller in size. This breed was achieved from selectively breeding fumis to become smaller and smaller. Their small size allows them to be easier pets in urban settings, despite being better suited for a rural one.
Snowfumi
"The connection between Erema and her children is the aether in their bodies, which carry their memories to her as they pass away. Since the fumis were taken from her without their remains returning to the planet, Erema had no knowledge of her fumis being abducted and toyed with. It was only when a kind-hearted scientist—remorseful for their actions and morning the passing of a friend—had spread a fumi's ashes on the planet they had been abducted from, that Erema became aware of the situation. She was conflicted, for although the humans did some truely horrible things to her fumis, she could also see through the memories of the deceased fumi, that the scientist and it shared many happy memories. She resolved that perhaps the humans didn't realize that what they were doing was so awful, and she wanted to make peace with them.
She sent part of herself in the form of a tiny, fumi-like creature with the scientist back to Earth. She spoke to the other humans, tried to show them how to create life with aether as a peace offering. She created a new breed of fumi for them that represented the spirit of Christmas, as it was one of the fondest memories shared from the deceased fumi. These were the first snowfumi.
The humans, perhaps frightened by the strange creature and the power it held, or perhaps too greedy to accept it's offer of peace, killed the small creature in an attempt to destroy the entity which spoke through it. Regardless of the reasons, they had betrayed her, and the snowfumis she created as a gift transformed to avenge the tiny emissary. They became vicious, hell-bent on destroying everything in their path, becoming abominable.
However the humans discovered that the aether taken from Erema's corpse would force the snowfumis to revert into a docile form, which they took advantage of by crushing the corpse into many particles. They hid these aether particles inside objects made to look like holiday themed items and gave a strict warning t never remove them, and the consumers were none the wiser for quite a while."
This breed is synthetically produced. Their unique looks, happiness-inducing vapor, and limited supply has made them highly desirable to collectors. Each snowfumi has an ACA-imbued object (Aether Controlling Agent), which keeps their aether under control and prevents them from transforming into their abominable form. Although rare in occurrence, snowfumis can easily survive in the wild, as they don't need food or water to survive.

Gummi Fumi
"With their new-found ability to create life from aether, the humans quickly went to work developing new fumi breeds. It was not an easy process, and they were only able to create very tiny creatures whose fragile bodies needed constant care to maintain.
This turned out to be even more profitable for them, however, since the owners of this new gummi breed would prove to pay any amount of money to keep their babies alive. To make matters worse, the breed was made in the image of the small Eeremian emissary herself, a mockery of the being they had slain."
A tiny, artificially created breed tailor-made to be pets for only those wealthy enough to keep them alive. They must consume a special substance daily in order to survive, which owners pay quite a lot to supply themselves with. Unknown to them is that substance, which is aether-infused crop milk, is regularly produced by nurse class fumis when they are nurturing puggles. For this reason, however uncommon it may be, gummi fumis are able to survive outside of human ownership so long as they are under the care of a nurse fumi. Lucky for gummis, nurse fumis are usually more than happy to adopt a puggle-like gummi into their care.
