The cannigoomi transformation is a mutation that can occur in any painted, dwarf, or snowfumi that partakes in cannibalism. Note: the gummi breed is immune to the effects that cause this transformation, and thus cannot become a cannigoomi. The change isn't immediate, as it requires that the fumi eat more and more of it's kin to progress, but changes occur fairly rapidly after making a visible appearance. The subject in the images above, for example, feasted on it's kin on and off for a period of 2 years before visible changes arose, but reached the post-transformation stage within 2 weeks after they began.
The direct cause of these changes are linked to the consumption of aether which, while it has no effect on humans or other Earth life aside from intoxication, does have absurd effects on fumis and presumably other lifeforms from Eremus. The few researchers who have had a chance to study cannigoomi remains uncovered that they have a much higher aether concentration than other fumis, which is likely the cause of the cannigoomi mutation.
The severity of the condition varies between individuals, but for the most part, these are the changes regularly observed:
- The metabolism speeds up tremendously, causing the fumi to quickly use up it's fat stores and leaving it with an insatiable, ravenous hunger. A heavily muscled frame, protruding spine, and atrophied or severely diminished tail are sure signs of the cannigoomi mutation. Chubby or fat cannigoomis may exist, but such individuals would have to be exceptionally gluttonous to counteract the extreme metabolism.
- The aether becomes too thick to produce vapor, oozing out of the mouth. It causes the fumi's vapor sack to swell to the point of bursting, the pain only serving to fuel the cannigoomi's barely controlled (if at all) rage. The aether itself is extremely caustic and tar-like, leaving victims of wounds inflicted with it prone to infection. Similarly to the komodo dragon, the cannigoomi can track prey with aether-inflicted wounds, oftentimes letting the prey become weak before going in for the kill.
- The eyes are unable to handle such high aether concentrations and will always melt either partially or completely away during the transformation, leaving the cannigoomi essentially blind. Most adapt by developing a rudimentary form of echolocation via a high-pitched rattling noise, although this leaves them easily disoriented by loud noises.
The occurrence of cannigoomi mutations are so far and few between that many consider them a cryptid, despite the remains that have been found. Needless to say, fumis and other creatures alike would be equally as horrified should they actually encounter such a beast, who is quick to devour anything in it's path to satisfying it's endless hunger.
