Body Modifications
While not wholly uncommon, modifying the body of a fumi is a controversial subject. Some would argue that fumis, being an intelligent species, are capable of deciding whether or not to make major and/or permanent changes to their body. On the other hand, it can be argued that we haven't done enough studies to determine exactly how well fumis may perceive the long time consequences of these decisions, and the sole responsibility for allowing a fumi to permanently modify their body rests on the person(s) who allowed the fumi to do so.
All that aside, there are a few popular body modifications, listed below.

Tattoos and BrandingBranding and tattooing, like for other animals, is a method used to identify a fumi's owner should it wander from their property. Like with other animals, this practice is controversial as it oftentimes causes some form of pain. Most breeds can be branded with a hot iron or through freeze-branding, but only temporary branding is only achievable for breeds with fur.
Tattooing or branding can be done for aesthetic purposes, although this (like many other aesthetic body modifications) is banned in many places. Temporary, non-toxic body paints and inks are wonderful alternatives to tattoos and brands, although they tend not to be as useful for identification purposes due to their temporary nature. |
Piercings and MicrochipsElectronic ear tags and microchip implants alike are extremely common, scanning them brings up information such as ownership, home location, and veterinary records.
All other types of piercings are purely aesthetic and can come in essentially any variety, although this (like many other aesthetic body modifications) is banned in many places. |
Ear Cropping and ShapingLike with other hunting and fighting animals, the ears are often cropped, since the ears are an easy target for another animal to grab or tear. Ear cropping for fumis has no other benefit, so cropped ears are often a sign that the fumi is being used in pit fighting.
The ears can be cropped or shaped for aesthetic purposes, although this (like many other aesthetic body modifications) is banned in many places. |
DeclawingA painful modification involving the removal of a fumi's toe tips in order to remove the claws and prevent regrowth. This is considered a form of animal cruelty in many places and is illegal as a result. A fumi's claws are oftentimes the least dangerous form of dispense at their disposal, removing them hardly makes a fumi any less dangerous.
